The Joy of Backyard Hoops: A Personal Journey
As I reflect on my childhood in Jefferson City, Missouri, one image stands out: the driveway hoop, a beacon of joy and community. It was more than just a basketball hoop; it was a symbol of freedom, a place where my brother and I could escape the mundane and create our own adventures. Our games were intense, filled with the competitive spirit that only siblings can share. We fought for every point, every advantage, because that's what siblings do - they push each other to be better.
Sports have always been a central part of my life. I played everything from soccer to volleyball, always juggling practices and games after school. But the driveway hoop held a special place in my heart. It was a constant, a permanent fixture in our driveway, and it brought together not just my family, but the entire neighborhood. It was a place where we could all come together, regardless of our backgrounds or social status. All you needed was a hoop and a ball, and you could play.
What makes backyard hoops so special is their inclusivity. Unlike some other sports, basketball doesn't discriminate based on wealth or social status. It's a level playing field where anyone can participate, regardless of their financial situation. This is what makes it so intrinsically American - it's a sport for the people, by the people.
As I look back on my childhood, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. The park hoop down the street from my current home in Minnesota evokes a warm feeling in my heart. There's something truly joyful about street ball - it's about community, about a shared love for the game. It's not about high stakes or professional glory; it's about the simple pleasure of playing with friends and family.
In my opinion, the joy of backyard hoops lies in their ability to bring people together. They create a sense of community, a shared experience that transcends social boundaries. This is why I started Unrivaled, a three-on-three women's basketball league, with New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart. We want to shift the culture and make it normal for girls to play street ball. We want them to feel comfortable creating their own pickup games or joining the boys' game.
What many people don't realize is that sports are incredibly important for girls. Playing pickup games builds confidence in the body, voice, and overall skills. It instills life principles that go beyond the court. This is why we created the three-on-three format and the one-on-one tournament - to showcase women being aggressive, unapologetic, and competitive. We want younger girls to see us doing this and believe that they can do it too.
In my view, the joy of backyard hoops is not just about the game itself, but about the community it creates. It's about the sense of belonging and shared experience that it fosters. It's about the joy of playing with friends and family, without the pressure and high stakes of professional sports.
